writers' guidelines

submissions
Many of our articles are assigned, however we welcome queries from writers around the world proposing topics they wish to cover. While detailed queries are preferred, we will also consider completed manuscripts. Every submission should include the writer’s credentials and any published clippings.

We prefer writers send materials via e-mail to submissions@yourpreemie.com. If unable to send via e-mail, writers may also send to: Your Preemie, PMB 264, 321 High School Rd NE, Bainbridge Island, WA 98110 USA. Please do not send originals as we are unable to return them. Include a self-addressed stamped envelope and an e-mail address where we may reply to your inquiry. Allow up to eight weeks for a response—no phone calls please.

Compensation will be commensurate with experience and skill. We will consider work from unpublished writers, but compensation will be at the low end of the scale. Writers are encouraged to send their payment expectations with their query or manuscript. Payment is made approximately 30 days after publication.

After accepting an article, a kill fee of 50 percent will be paid should we decide to not run the article.

style
Accuracy is of utmost importance in addition to clever, concise, insightful writing. Articles should include multiple sources; medical sources should be reputable, well-respected individuals in the preemie community. We use Associated Press style. We also look to writers to make suggestions for photographs and artwork when appropriate. As an international publication, we encourage writers to seek out sources and information from around the globe.

Most feature articles range from 1,500-2,500 words depending on the topic. Please review past copies of the magazine thoroughly to get an idea of the kind of writing that works for us. If you are new to magazine writing, we suggest you study the departments and propose story ideas for specific departments.

rights
We buy all rights to manuscripts. Copyright is returned to the author 120 days after a piece is published in Your Preemie. All editorial material is protected by copyright, and we retain the right to reprint editorial material for our promotional use, with appropriate credit given.
